Job Duties

Responsible for patrolling the campus including off-campus facilities, to enforce laws, rules and regulations for the protection and security of personnel and property, and to detect and prevent attempts by persons to violate the law. Positions in this class do not exercise police powers. However, positions are trained in relevant areas such as patrol techniques, crisis intervention, rules of evidence, search and seizure, rape prevention, interviewing techniques, laws of arrest, Hawai‘i penal code, etc.; maintaining crowd control at demonstrations and rallies, and directing and controlling vehicular traffic for all large university related functions; providing escort services; and positions exercise such knowledge and training when investigating violations and/or unusual incidents, apprehending violator(s) issuing citations, making citizen’s arrests, and responding to emergency calls and renders first aid and CPR; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience Requirement

Specialized Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience in the enforcement of security laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the protection of personnel and property.

License Requirement

Applicants must possess a valid license to drive in the State of Hawai‘i.

Certification Required

All applicants must be able to obtain valid First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificates, or equivalent within six (6) months from the date of employment.

Substitutions Allowed

1. Successful completion of a reserve police training course which led to the issuance of a badge as a Reserve Police Officer may be substituted for one (1) year of the Specialized Experience.

2. Successful completion of a two-year or four-year program in police science from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one (1) year of the Specialized Experience.

Applicants must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position, effectively and safely, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Internal Complaint Process (Administrative Review)

Applicants who do not agree with an action taken on their application must file an internal complaint with the System Director of Human Resources, in accordance with the University’s Administrative Procedure A9.140. The internal compliant form must be completed and contain the specific reasons(s) supporting the request for review. Complaints must be postmarked within seven (7) working days from the date of notice and sent to: University of Hawai‘i, Office of Human Resources, Civil Service Employee Relations Section, 2440 Campus Road, Administrative Services Bldg. #2, Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96822. A change as a result of the internal complaint will not affect the employment consideration of referred applicants or another applicant’s appointment to the vacancy.

Registration Requirement

Applicants must be registered as a Guard with the State of Hawaii Board of Private Detectives and Guards, in accordance with Act 208, Session Laws of Hawaii 2010.
